Soulshine Pizza Factory (Township)

A Hefty Slice

A Hefty Slice

You’re probably tired of reading about pizza.

It’s no wonder since I’ve already touched on places such as Sal and Mookie’s, Bianchi’s, Domenica, and the other Soulshine. Even the frozen pies from Shakespeares, our favorite pizza of all time, got a brief mention. We also make our own pizza about once a week using my Easy Pizza Dough recipe.

Have you had enough yet? Too bad.

It pains my husband to drive further than five miles for a restaurant, store or even church, but amazingly he is willing to trek up to Soulshine Pizza Factory any time, any day. Mmmhmm.

Soulshine has two locations but we like the one in the Township. It’s a more polished space and neatly decorated with music memorabilia. They also serve cold Abita root beer on tap in a frosty Ball jar. After being seated I immediately requested a glass to savor for later because refills are not free.

On this occasion we met two family members, sharing two salads and two pies between the four of us. We ordered a Greek salad, Caesar salad, medium and large pizza.

The Greek salad includes a tangy balsamic vinaigrette, hearts of palm, black olives and feta cheese. The Caesar salad is nothing new but laden with crisp croutons and garlicky dressing. I like to start with fresh vegetables to offset the guilt, even if there’s dressing involved.

Typically we bypass the specialty fancy pants pizzas and split a medium with pepperoni, Portabella mushrooms and green bell peppers. Since we needed another large pie we also got The Kitchen Sink (yes, again), which is loaded down with tomatoes, pepperoni, sausage, bell peppers, onions, button mushrooms and black olives. This is the pizza for the indecisive.

To hold all those toppings the crust is fairly thick and sturdy; no undercooked doughy messes here. Although they offer a wheat crust we prefer the white. There was a noticeably larger amount of cheese on the medium pizza, but both were disappearing fast than I could snap photos.

No particular element of the pizza stands out, which is maybe why it’s so good. The sauce isn’t over sweet, the toppings are fresh and generously scattered about, and the crust is crisp but not too chewy. Everything comes together to create one darn marvelous pizza.

It gets busy on the weekends and they have a great lunch special, but we’re always game for Soulshine pizza.
