Ben and I are serious breakfast people.

When we rise and shine to greet a new day it’s most prudent to talk to us after we eat. Otherwise we get grumpy, one of us more than the other. (Not me!)

On the way back from Ship Island and our Gulf Coast getaway we stopped in Hattiesburg for breakfast.

Being the home of the University of Southern Mississippi, I’m surprised there aren’t more local, late night, greasy spoon diners for all those Golden Eagles. We’ve eaten at 206 Front before but wanted something more casual and quick on our way home from camping.

Doing a quick search and filtering out chains, Southbound Bagel and Coffee Shop came up and was open. We made our way downtown and pulled up to the end of Front street.

Southbound Bagel and Coffee Shop occupies a cozy, corner space packed full of mismatched tables, chairs and a counter. The seating is limited, especially when one person takes a table for four. Luckily there are a couple of tables outside as well.

We ordered one cappuccino, one mocha and two bacon, egg and cheese bagel sandwiches. I had mine on a honey wheat bagel and Ben got the plain bagel. I was tempted to order a blueberry or jalapeno cheddar bagel to go but held off.

The coffee drinks fell a little short, a squirt of Hershey’s syrup qualified mine to be a mocha. Thankfully the sandwiches were much better. The quirky, wobbly shape of my bagel bore the resemblance of being handmade. The slightly sweet bagel was a good thickness and made a filling breakfast sandwich.

They offer a variety of bagel and cream cheese flavors, omelets and sandwiches. Next time I would get the same combination on a jalapeno cheddar bagel or the lox and cream cheese. I wish I had ordered bagels to go.

We made our way back to Jackson, full and happy.

  1. The bagels are definitely handmade in house. They actually steam the bagels instead of boiling them because they didn’t have room. I love the Onion and Everything bagels!
