You may be wondering if Ben gets equal attention for his birthday week, and rest assure he did. For his birthday weekend we went to Hattiesburg, and watched the University of Southern Mississippi and University of Kansas football game.
On the way to Hattiesburg we made a quick pit stop at Billy’s Burgers for dinner, a cheeseburger, french fries and vanilla shake for him, and a hamburger for me. This cute little burger shack is situated directly on the side of Highway 18 in Puckett, Mississippi. I wasn’t too hungry at the time, but the hamburger was really good, juicy and had a nice salty crust.
We rolled into town in time for a short amount of tailgating and climbed up to the top of The Rock. Not having alliance to Southern who was playing my alma matter’s rival, the Jayhawks, it was hard to be invested in the game. Nevertheless we enjoyed catching up with some friends and the cool breeze in the stadium.
Saturday morning we ate brunch at 206 Front, and despite various reviews online, had quite an enjoyable meal. 206 Front is located downtown, complete with a rooftop patio and spacious dining areas.
After being seated, we were presented with complimentary cinnamon rolls and ordered drinks, taking advantage of the weekend special, two for one mimosas and bloody Marys. They make their own bloody Mary mix, but it wasn’t nearly as good as anything I’ve had in New Orleans. It lacked any spicy tomato richness and was a tad bland.
Luckily, our brunch dishes made up for the drink special. I had Eggs Orleans, two crab cakes placed on scrambled eggs (my request) topped with hollandaise sauce, and served with hash brown potatoes (or a polenta cake) and fresh fruit. Ben ordered Eggs Benedict, poached eggs placed on pancetta, an English muffin, and topped with hollandaise sauce, served with hash browns and fresh fruit.
My dish was divine, the crab cakes slightly heavy on the breading (as most are), delicious with the crispy, thinly sliced fried potatoes. The waiter did forget our fruit, but quickly amended that after bringing it to his attention. Contrary to others experiences we had attentive service besides that minor hiccup, but we did get there bright and early on a Saturday morning and when we left the crowd was sparse.
In addition to Ben’s birthday weekend trip, I baked him two loaves of banana bread to take to work (his request), planned an impromptu get together at Buffalo Wild Wings on Sunday to watch football with his friends, and that night we ate at Cock of the Walk. Not surprisingly, he doesn’t care for extending his day as long as possible, I do plenty of that for the both of us.
