Once in awhile I need a break from routine local news stories, and navigate from the Clarion Ledger to the Jackson Metromix website. Immediately I click on the restaurant tab and immerse myself in reviews. When not eating, reading about food is nearly the next best thing.
The review of La Omonia Mexican & Columbian Deli-Bakery caught my eye, because we have a weakness for hole-in-the-wall taqueria type establishments. We frequent La Taqueria Guatalupe (just down the road), for tacos and I wanted to compare.
The restaurant is located off of the relentlessly busy County Line Road in a small strip of shops. Ben had deemed it necessary to drive the El Camino on this occasion (which you can see pictured above). As the review indicated, they occupy a former Quizno’s which is apparent by the remaining decor. Upon entering the door, we heard the majority of patrons speaking Spanish, a promising indication of food authenticity.
We took a seat at a booth and perused the menus which consists of tacos, tortas, burritos, empanadas, quesadillas, fruit smoothies, agua frescas (fruit waters) and breakfast offerings. Ben ordered the burrito, I got three tacos (two pastor/pork, and one asada/beef), we split a chorizo quesadilla and a pina agua fresca. Sadly they were out of empanadas. They also have Mexican candy, chips, cookies and baked goods available.
My tacos were double wrapped with corn tortillas, the pork was slightly sweet, and served with a tiny container of salsa type sauce on the side. They were garnished with onions and cilantro, but not much else. Although I prefer the tacos at the Taqueria de Guatalupe, the simplicity of these allowed the flavor of the meat shine through. The burrito was average, nothing out of the ordinary, but for only $5 it’s a fairly good deal for the size. The quesadilla was overly greasy due to the chorizo; I would choose a different meat.
Overall we enjoyed our food, but next time our focus will be on the Columbian offerings such as the Cuban torta or empanadas. La Omonia represents a small seed of hope for ethnic, family-owned places among the chain restaurant madness, so brush up on some Spanish and go try it out for yourself.
