Since moving down to Mississippi in August, I had been continuing my existing position from Columbia by working from home. Telecommuting, if you will. After several months of intense searching and dead end leads, I landed a new job in December.
Having a home office certainly had its advantages. Many a work day were proclaimed “pajama day”, the communal kitchen was well stocked with tea and snacks, and my music was loud. I was very thankful for the flexibility, but the days became long without any human interaction. I found myself looking forward to trips to the grocery store, bank or the post office to strike up conversation with strangers.
From my perspective, one of the best things about being back in an office are the people. Co-workers make the day enjoyable amusing. If this wasn’t true, The Office might not nearly be as popular. Everyone knows a Dwight.
Two of my co-workers celebrated the beginning of our friendship at Spice Avenue. More accurately, Spice Avenue has been on my list and they were up for the lunch field trip. Either way, we were happily on our way down I-55.
Spice Avenue serves Indian food and it’s delicious. The restaurant is somewhat dark inside, but there are a number of nice booths, tables and Bollywood movies playing on a large flat screen television.
We all ordered the lunch buffet which was loaded with hot, fresh curry fish, butter chicken, lentils, tandoori chicken potatoes, jasmine rice, spinach, vegetarian curries and various other dishes I cannot remember. Nevertheless, it was all very good. The servers continually bring baskets of crispy, soft naan to the table.
Although I am usually against buffets because I never eat enough to justify the cost, it is the best way to sample a large variety of Indian dishes. To round out the meal, I ordered a mango lassi (yogurt drink) which was tangy, sweet and refreshing.
The total cost was around $14 for the buffet and drink, but well worth the discovery of excellent Indian food and commemorating the start of new friendships.
